Baby product marketing runs on anxiety, and the useful response is to be specific about what each thing is actually for. Most of what gets bought in the first year is consumable, chosen once and then repurchased without further thought, which makes the first choice worth a few minutes.
Wipes are the clearest example. The meaningful difference between wipe brands is the ingredient list, not the packaging or the claims. A shorter list means fewer things that can irritate skin, and it is the entire reason some wipes cost noticeably more than others. If your baby has no reaction to standard wipes, the cheaper case is genuinely fine and the premium is buying reassurance rather than outcome.
The one people get wrong is swim diapers, because they look like nappies and behave nothing like them. A regular nappy is designed to absorb, so in a pool it swells with water, sags, and stops containing anything. A swim diaper deliberately does not absorb — it is a containment barrier, nothing else. Putting a regular nappy in the water is the mistake, and most pools will turn you away for it.
