Start with one device and a real problem, not a whole system

Last reviewed August 8, 2026

Smart home buying goes wrong in a predictable way: someone buys several devices at once, spends an evening setting them up, and uses two of them. The devices that survive are the ones solving a problem that already annoyed you. The ones that get unplugged are the ones bought because the category seemed interesting.

The three things on this page do genuinely different jobs. One is a voice assistant with no screen, one is the same thing with a screen, and one is not a smart device at all but the network everything else depends on. That last one is worth thinking about first: a mesh system fixes dead WiFi spots, and no amount of smart devices works well on a network that drops.

Screens change what an assistant is for. Without one it answers questions, sets timers and plays music. With one it shows recipes, becomes a video-call endpoint and displays a calendar. Whether that is worth the extra money depends entirely on where it sits — a kitchen counter or a hallway wall justifies a screen, a bedside table usually does not.

Which one suits you

Some room in your house has bad WiFi

The eero mesh system, and buy this before any smart device. Mesh works by placing several units that hand off to each other, rather than one router shouting through walls. It is the fix when moving the router is not an option, and it makes everything else on this page more reliable.

You want to try a voice assistant without committing

The Echo Dot. No screen, small, cheap enough that discovering you do not use it costs very little. Most people find it becomes a kitchen timer and a speaker, which is a perfectly good outcome.

You want it on a kitchen counter

The Echo Show 8. Eight inches is the size where a screen earns its place — large enough to follow a recipe or take a video call, small enough not to dominate a worktop.

You want a family hub on a wall

The Echo Show 15. It is wall-mountable, which changes what it is: a shared calendar, shopping list and note board that happens to also be a speaker. Judge it as furniture, not as an appliance.

What people get wrong

  • Buying several devices before using one. Start with the room that annoys you most and add only when the first one has earned its place.
  • Adding smart devices to a weak network. Fix the WiFi first or you will blame the devices for dropouts that are not their fault.
  • Putting a screen where nobody stands. Screens justify their cost in kitchens and hallways, rarely on a bedside table.
  • Assuming everything works together. Devices commit you to an ecosystem, and mixing them is where the frustration comes from.
