Litter is the rare product category where the person paying is not the one whose opinion decides the outcome. A cat that dislikes the litter does not complain — it goes elsewhere in the house, and by the time you understand what happened you have a behavioural problem rather than a shopping one.
The single most common cause is fragrance. Perfumed litter is made to solve the owner's problem, and cats reject it far more often than owners expect, because a scent that reads as fresh to a human is overwhelming to an animal standing in it. If a cat has started avoiding the tray, scented litter is the first thing to remove.
The second most common cause is a sudden change. Cats form strong preferences about texture underfoot, and switching brands overnight is enough to break the habit in an animal that had no problem before.
