Dog food arguments are loud and mostly unresolvable, so it is worth being clear about the parts that are not in dispute. Changing food abruptly upsets most dogs regardless of how good the new food is, so any switch happens over roughly a week, mixing increasing proportions. A dog that reacts badly to a sudden change has usually reacted to the change rather than to the food.
Kibble size is the quiet variable. Small dogs offered standard kibble either bolt it whole or refuse it, and owners read that as fussiness when it is a physical mismatch. Food formulated for small breeds is not marketing — the pieces are a size a small jaw can manage.
Chews are a different kind of decision, because the failure mode is not disappointment but a vet visit. Rawhide is a genuine choking and intestinal blockage risk: it swells, it comes apart in swallowable chunks, and dogs are enthusiastic about exactly the wrong thing. Rawhide-free alternatives exist for that reason, and supervision still applies to all of them.
Your dog reacts to their current food

Moving off chicken to a different protein is the usual first step when a dog is itchy or has loose stools, and salmon is the common alternative.
