The real cost is counter space, and nobody prices that in

Last reviewed August 8, 2026

Countertop appliances are sold on capability — nine functions, eleven presets, six cooking modes — and bought on impulse. What actually determines whether one earns its keep is far duller: whether you have somewhere to put it, and whether the thing it does faster is something you were doing anyway.

That second test is the useful one. An air fryer genuinely reheats chips better than an oven and gets there in a fraction of the time. If you eat chips, that is a real gain every week. A bread maker also works exactly as advertised, and sits unused in most kitchens that own one, because the owner did not previously make bread and the machine did not change that. Capability is not the same as fit.

The first test is the one people skip. Every appliance here is large. A Breville countertop oven occupies roughly the footprint of a microwave; an espresso machine with a built-in grinder wants permanent space beside a power socket and near a sink. An appliance you have to lift out of a cupboard is one you use on weekends and then stop using. If it cannot live on the counter, be honest that you are buying a weekend habit.

Which one suits you

You want an air fryer and cook for one or two

The Ninja basket fryer. The standard shape for the standard job, and at 4 quarts it suits one or two people — check that against your household before ordering, because a basket that needs two batches removes most of the speed advantage that made you want one.

You want an air fryer that also replaces the oven

The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro. This is a countertop oven that also air fries rather than an air fryer claiming to bake, and the difference is real: it will roast, toast and hold a temperature properly. It is also the largest thing on this page and will not be moved once placed.

You want to cook things that take hours in less time

The Instant Pot Duo Plus. Pressure cooking genuinely collapses the time on dried beans, tough cuts and stock — that is not marketing, it is physics. The Plus adds sous vide and sterilise over the standard Duo; six quarts suits three to four people. Ignore the count of functions and buy it for pressure cooking.

You care about espresso rather than coffee

The Breville Barista Express, and the built-in grinder is the entire argument. Pre-ground coffee stales within days of opening and cannot produce good espresso whatever the machine does afterwards. Be clear-eyed that this is a hobby purchase: it needs learning, adjusting and daily cleaning. If you want coffee rather than espresso, a pod machine will make you happier for a tenth of the money.

Your freezer cannot keep up with ice

The DUMOS countertop maker, which needs no plumbed line — you pour water in. Worth knowing what it is not: it does not store ice. Ice sits in a basket and melts back into the reservoir to be refrozen, so it makes ice on demand rather than holding a supply. For a party you fill a cooler as it goes.

What people get wrong

  • Buying on function count. A nine-in-one does one or two things you will actually use, and the other seven are a longer box.
  • Not measuring the counter first. Height matters as much as width — most of these will not fit under a wall cabinet.
  • Buying an appliance for a habit you do not have. It works exactly as advertised and still ends up in a cupboard.
  • Sizing an air fryer basket for the household you wish you had. Two batches removes the speed that was the point.
  • Buying an espresso machine without a grinder to save money. Pre-ground coffee makes bad espresso in any machine, so the saving buys a worse result.
  • Expecting a countertop ice maker to hold a supply. It makes ice continuously and melts it back; it is not a freezer.

🏆 #1 Pick

DUMOS Countertop Ice Maker, 26 lbs per 24 Hours

Makes ice on a countertop without a plumbed line, which is the point if your freezer tray never keeps up. It does not store ice — it melts back and refreezes.
